How Safe?

(Carl Edwards: Talladega 2012)
(Kyle Larson: Daytona 2013)

Daytona Crash 2/23/13

Recently there has been a lot of debate about safety and its' association with racing.  Previously the driver was the main focus with the recent addition of head/neck restraints; but as the NASCAR Nationwide race  last Saturday, along with a few other recent crashes proved, fan safety is also a major concern.  About 30 people where hurt by debris on the last lap of the race when Kyle Larson's car went airborne and shredded the safety fence.  This is a big concern and history has proved it usually takes a shocking crash like this to motivate change.

  1. Have you every gone to one of these races? Would you sit close? I have to admit, I would be nervous and probably prefer to sit towards the back after this.

  2. The good thing is that the racer was safe and they will probably put stronger fencing so they can protect the people on the outside. My mom went to a race and she said someone got hit by a tire while she was there and that was the last race she ever went to.

  3. I saw that on TV it looked pretty scary a lot of the car was gone. I think i would be worried to sit that close but at the same time i think it would be cool. It can be pretty crazy i bet and scary when something like that happens but at least everyone was safe like rachel said

  4. Thankfully no one got killed, and i think that NASCAR should make it so that the stands should be farther back so in case something like this happens then people wouldn't get hurt

  5. I agree Austin. I have a feeling they may have to make some changes.
